The restored Dissenters Graveyard will be open to visitors, with stewards available to provide information. The Third Gallery
Quire will perform hymns of the period.
Exeter Dissenters Graveyard is a monument to the 17th, 18th and 19th century struggles for freedom of religion and speech. In
the mid- 18th century Dissenters (Protestants who rejected some of the doctrines and practises of the Church of England)
found increasing difficulties in the way of burial in the Church’s graveyards and the Bishop of Exeter actually forbad burials of
Dissenters in Church graveyards within his diocese. Exeter’s Dissenters purchased a plot of land founded their own graveyard,
known to some of them as The Saints’ Rest.
After periods of neglect the Graveyard has been restored, with monuments repaired and re-laid as needed. A large research
project has uncovered the histories of individuals and families represented n the Graveyard and this can be accessed via QR
codes displayed on site, by written materials available on site and through the Exeter Dissenters Graveyard Trust website. A
history of the Graveyard will be available to purchase.
The Third Gallery Quire, which specialises in hymns of the 18th and 19th centuries is performing on the afternoon of Saturday
the 18th.
