We welcome Ensemble Phaedrus, as part of their UK tour following an appearance at the Cambridge Early Music festival.
The ensemble first came together during their studies at the renowned Swiss music centre, Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, with members from around the world. The group became fascinated with the refinement to be found in Renaissance music, giving it a completely distinctive character in the 16th and 17th centuries. In England, one of the greatest patrons of the arts was Henry VIII who developed the cultural and musical splendour of the Tudor court, and it is music of Henry's court that four members of Phaedrus are bringing to Culmstock in October. Their programme, 'THE KING'S FLUTES', explores the music composed for Renaissance flutes (clearly a favourite instrument of the King since there were around 80 in his collection), lute and voice.
