The Library of Devon & Exeter Institution

About

The Devon and Exeter Institution is a unique heritage site, thriving independent library and educational charity, in the heart of the city.  We offer individually tailored events and meetings in beautiful historic and interesting spaces.  Ideally located on Exeter’s Cathedral Green we are just a few minutes walk from public transport links and central car parks.

The Institution occupies a Medieval building, originally owned by the Cathedral.  In 1814, ‘200 Gentlemen of the City’ took ownership of 7 Cathedral Close and adapted the double-courtyard layout to create two elegant Georgian rooms.

Evening events can be held in the galleried Outer Library, this space really adds ‘wow’ factor to any event.  The Outer Library is suitable for upto 50 standing and 35 seated.

We have two meeting rooms, with barrelled ceilings and marble fireplaces, which overlook Cathedral Green.  They can be hired out individually or together to provide a separate breakout space.  The larger room seats 18 boardroom or 24 café and the smaller seats upto 8 boardroom.

Short tours of the building and select book displays can be arranged - people visiting the Institution love to find out a little more about our history and our collections while they are here, which really adds making your event memorable.

Free wifi is available, we can also provide teas/coffees, projectors/screen, flip charts/pens, as well as glass/cutlery & crockery hire.  We also have a kitchen which caterers can use if required.

If you would like to come and see the spaces first hand please call or email to arrange a visit.
