About

A chance to explore the western side of the Exe estuary on a flat, traffic-free route, with our local RSPB wardens. We'll be in search of Ospreys as they migrate South for the Winter, stopping to rest and hunt on the Estuary.

One of the UK's largest and most distinctive birds of prey, Ospreys spend the summer breeding in Scandinavia, Scotland and Norther England and during late August start undertake their marathon migrations back to Africa. During this journey, both adults and newly-fledged juveniles stop off at our rivers and estuaries, showing off their unique fishing abilities and using favourite perches for feeding.

At this time of year there is as ever a whole host of wildlife to enjoy - other raptors including marsh harriers, hobbies and peregrine falcons are often seen, and Summer migratory birds such as wheatears, swifts and yellow wagtails are likely to be around. Early-arriving winter visitors like black-tailed godwits, teals and dunlins have also put in appearances in previous years.

Please bring your own bike - and check the weather forecast beforehand for appropriate clothing. The cycling will pace will be very easy, with most of the time spent watching out for wildlife and plenty of time to learn about the Exe from our Wardens.

If you need to hire a bike, we have a range of sizes available, at an additional cost of £5 for an adult - please use the appropriate ticket purchase. Children's bikes and binoculars will be available to borrow, at no charge (or your chosen donation) - details will be sent out nearer the time.
