The fascinating history, heritage and art embedded into our city is one of the many reasons why Exeter is a fantastic place to visit! Due to the global pandemic and a third national lockdown in the UK, our cultural organisations have had to close their doors to the public once again.
There are many ways in which you can support Exeter’s local institutions – by purchasing a gift card or souvenir from their shop, donating to support their work or by simply spreading the word! Take a look below and help our organisations continue their incredible work…
Exeter Cathedral
Exeter Cathedral is a testament to the creativity, skill and devotion of those who built it. Dating back 900 years, it is one of England's most beautiful medieval cathedrals and one of the finest examples of decorated Gothic architecture in this country. It is most famous for its two Norman towers, impressive west front carvings and the longest unbroken stretch of Gothic vaulting in the world!
Donate to our magnificent Cathedral here, the historical attraction doesn’t receive regular funding from the Church of England – you’ll be making a huge difference and allow them to continue to be present for the community. Exeter Phoenix
Exeter Phoenix is one of the South West’s leading contemporary arts venues, offering an exciting and varied programme of theatre, dance, performance, music, film and visual arts, and attracting over 320,000 visitors a year!
There are a number of ways in which you can help support Exeter Phoenix and the fantastic work that they do. Donate to their Coronavirus Impact Fund, buy a gift voucher for a lover of art and performance, book a ticket to a future event and adopt a seat in their auditorium! (How cool is this!)
Royal Albert Memorial Museum
There’s more in Exeter’s award-winning museum than you might imagine, its 16 galleries of displays take visitors on a voyage of discovery from pre-history to the present day and from Exeter all around the world. With three special exhibition spaces, its changing programme means there is likely to be something different to see every visit, from national touring shows to community displays and fine art from the city’s collection.

Tuckers Hall
Tuckers Hall is home to The City of Exeter's important historic woollen cloth trade heritage. This ancient hall of the still existing Incorporation of Weavers, Fullers and Shearmen, one of the craft guilds of Exeter. With 15th Century roof timber and Jacobean panelling this building is a real gem and one of the most important in the city's financial history. Cygnet Theatre
The Cygnet Theatre is a training theatre with a varied programme of classical, modern and musical plays throughout the year, including new theatre works. The theatre has nearly 40 years’ experience of helping young actors to develop their individual qualities. They offer drama training in the form of one day courses, a one year foundation course or three years full time professional training for actors. Cygnet graduates have gone on to have successful careers in all aspects of stage, film, TV & Radio, to form their own companies and found theatres.

Powderham Castle
Powderham Castle is a beautiful, 600 year old manor near Exeter and the home of the Earl & Countess of Devon. The castle has family-friendly written all over it – you can go on a castle tour, explore the spectacular grounds and get involved with seasonal activities!
Support Powderham Castle by purchasing tickets to their future events, these include Comedy in the Park, Gone Wild Festival and pop sensation Olly Murs! Not to mention, purchase day tickets to experience the castle for yourself once it has re-opened to visitors!
Nicholas Priory
St Nicholas Priory is Exeter’s oldest building. Founded by William the Conqueror in 1087, the priory with its extensive grounds was dissolved and partly destroyed during the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII. Turned into a rich merchant’s town house, the priory was linked to the woollen cloth trade and the busy life of commerce in the city. Turned into homes and later tenements, the city council rescued the building and made it accessible to the public as a living history museum.
Donate any amount to support Nicholas Priory and sign up to their membership scheme to keep up to date, an annual subscription is just £5!
Exeter Guildhall
Exeter Guildhall has served as the centrepiece of Exeter's civic life for more than 800 years. A structure of outstanding architectural interest, it is not merely an ancient monument but remains a busy working building - still in regular use for a variety of civic functions and full meetings of the City Council. It can also be hired for weddings and civil ceremonies. Support the Guildhall by booking a tour once it re-opens to the public. Prices start at £6.00 for a private tour including tea coffee & biscuits and £9.00 for a private tour with a cream tea. Simply email guildhall.bookings@exeter.gov.uk to book!
Northcott Theatre
The 460-seat Exeter Northcott Theatre is the city’s flagship professional theatre, producing and curating a vibrant programme of exceptional work from its home at the heart of the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus. The varied programme offers a platform for the best work by emerging and established local, regional, national and international artists – visitors will find an exciting mix of the best dance, opera, classical drama and family theatre, spiced with a healthy dash of comedy and dining events. The Northcott does a lot of education and reach out work in the City and has recently re--launched the Northcott Young Company to involve young people within certain productions and workshops and Saturday classes.

Barnfield Theatre
Exeter Barnfield Theatre is a fully furnished establishment that is used by all parts of our community. The theatre has excellent stage and lighting equipment; 289 comfortable, tip-up, seats which have been recently reupholstered and in full rake for complete view of the stage from all parts of the theatre. It is also suitable for conferences, lectures and displays as well as stage productions. The Clifford Room can be used for many different purposes, these include a studio theatre or conference room. The seating is modular and can be raked, and can be arranged for any theatrical requirements.

Devon and Exeter Institution
The Devon and Exeter Institution is a thriving independent library and educational charity in the heart of the city. They welcome new members and visitors of all ages. The founders established the Institution in 1813, in order to promote ‘the general diffusion of Science, Literature and the Arts, and for illustrating the Natural and Civil History of the county of Devon and the History of the City of Exeter’. This resolution remains at the centre of our strategy to this day.

Exeter Underground Passages
Exeter's Underground Passages were built to house the pipes that brought clean drinking water into medieval Exeter. A guided tour of Exeter's Underground Passages is a memorable event - narrow, dark, interesting and exciting. Visit the heritage centre before your guided tour, packed with interactive exhibits and interpretation.

Custom House
The Custom House Visitor Centre is located right in the centre of Exeter's historic quayside and occupies one of the most historic buildings on the waterfront. It houses lively displays, illustrations and artefacts will bring the history and development of Exeter’s Quayside to life. As well as models and items from the cloth industry such as “tenter hooks and tillet blocks”, an exciting audio-visual presentation “Exeter, 2000 years of history” highlights Exeter’s history from Roman times until today. Exeter Red Coat Guided Tours
The City's free award winning Red Coat Guided Tours are provided by Exeter City Council and are the perfect way to explore Exeter, one of the oldest cities of England. Run by experienced qualified volunteer guides a variety of tours are available, each one focusing on a different aspect of Exeter's history and culture. Tours run daily, except 25th and 26th December! Take a look at the tours you can embark on here, once they’re up and running again!
Devon Sculpture Park
Devon Sculpture Park is the UK's leading smaller-scale rewilding project and environmental art centre, just a few miles south of Exeter City. An historic estate retreat on the outskirts of Exeter with wilded Capability Brown gardens and Robert Adam architecture overlooking the sea. Offering Day Visits, Group Visits, school visits and guided tours, workshops and retreats! Sound Gallery Studios
Sound Gallery Studios is the longest-standing professional recording studio in Exeter run by artist-led social enterprise Sound Gallery CIC, nestled in the basement of Exeter Phoenix in the cultural heart of the city. Experience the magic of Christmas in Exeter. Our historic city is the perfect place to celebrate the festive season. The festivities start on the 15th November with the opening of the Cathedral Christmas Market, and new for 2024 is the free Countdown to Christmas Trail!
