The Event Exeter team is thrilled to announce they have achieved the prestigious Gold ranking in the Green Meetings accreditation, positioning the University of Exeter as a leader in sustainable event venues and management.
But what does this accreditation actually mean and how was it achieved? We sat down with the Event Exeter team to learn why this is such great news for visitors and attendees to events at the University.
Global recognition for sustainable practices
The Green Meetings accreditation, managed by Green Tourism, is a globally recognised standard that signifies eco-friendly practices. This accolade provides assurance to the growing number of environmentally conscious conference and event organisers seeking green venues.
People, Planet, and Places: The core of our sustainability efforts
Achieving Gold status required a rigorous five-month assessment, gathering supporting evidence from various departments across the campus. The assessment focused on three main categories: People, Planet, and Places.
Aligned with the University’s Strategy 2030, Event Exeter and the University’s catering team have been diligently working to adopt more sustainable practices. Initiatives include promoting plant-based menus, reducing food waste, developing an on-campus kitchen garden, and collaborating with local food and Fairtrade suppliers. Event organisers can be confident in the sustainable food practices in place.
Visitors and event attendees are encouraged to opt for sustainable travel options, with guidance provided on making their events greener. Accommodation improvements include partnering with Eco Laundry for vacation linen, using sustainable toiletries, and eliminating single-use plastics.
Commitment to sustainability in every aspect
Event Exeter remains dedicated to enhancing its sustainability goals and offering greener options for clients. The positive feedback from assessors highlights the success of these efforts:
“Event Exeter at the University of Exeter has done an exceptional job in achieving the Green Meetings Gold award upon initial assessment. The site has scored strongly across the criteria, demonstrating that sustainability is ingrained into the operations and procedures of the business. The Event team makes a distinct effort to participate in the University's green initiatives and targets of reduction while also encouraging clients to minimise the impact of their event. Highlights of the assessment include a good sustainability statement, use of energy-efficient lighting and heating, staff awareness and training, and a commitment to staff and customer health and wellbeing.”
