A large part of the local culture in Exeter revolves around food and drink. The city’s location in the heart of Devon, surrounded by fertile farmland and close to miles and miles of coastline makes it easy to shrink your food foodprint here. So many of the city’s eateries proudly serve locally produced food and drink on their menus, and outlying farms proudly show off their wares in farm shops, such as those at Quickes, Greendale and Darts Farm, as well as hosting special talks and demonstrations.
The Exeter Food & Drink Trail celebrates these fantastic local producers, bringing them together on a map showcasing Exeter's food and drink offering. With over 50 businesses on the map you may not have time to try them all, but here’s a selection of experiences we’ve put together for your foodie Microgap…
Join a Winemakers Tour at Pebblebed Vineyard with wine maker Alex Mills. The tour includes a walk around the vineyard with explanations of the vine varieties and challenges in growing grapes in Devon, then you will visit Pebblebed’s winery to learn about the processes involved in making different wines. A tasting of five of the wines follows, with plenty of opportunity to discuss the vineyard or wine making methods.
Tours run from 9th May – to 26th September 2019: Thursdays at 4pm and Saturdays at 11am & 3pm. Book online here.
Follow the vineyard tour with a visit to Pebblebed’s tasting cellar, located in an old vaulted warehouse in the riverside town of Topsham, close to Exeter. The latest vintages line the walls and are available to taste, accompanied by sharing boards of local tapas such as local cheeses, meats and Italian home-made thin crust pizzas. Open Tuesday – Saturday evenings 5:30pm - 10pm.
Fancy improving your culinary skills? Receive expert professional tuition from experienced chefs at the Exeter Cookery School, located in a converted 1830s warehouse right beside the water on Exeter's historic quayside. The stunning purpose-built kitchens have been kitted out for real home cooks. Choose from full day or half day courses, themed for all tastes from seafood to chocolate-making! View the course calendar and book online here.
We challenge you to find better river views than those of the River Exe Café… situated on a floating barge just off the water-ski lane on the River Exe, only accessible by boat – either your own, or a water taxi from Exmouth Marina.
If you like fresh fish this is the place for you, as fisherman deliver their catches directly to the café, and the specials menu changes daily to incorporate these. A huge emphasis is placed on the use of local produce, and you can taste some of Devon’s finest here. A truly unique dining experience! Book online here.
