3081 reviewsThis outdoor tour looks at the exterior of the Cathedral and considers the successive phases of medieval building work from the twelfth century onwards, starting with a Norman cathedral and culminating in the current decorated Gothic cathedral. The tour discusses why some parts of the Norman structure were retained and what the influences were on the styles of the two cathedrals. What is unique about Exeter Cathedral, and how has its external appearance evolved over nine hundred years? To what extent would the structure we see today be recognisable to those who lived in previous centuries?
