The Donkey Sanctuary's award-winning restaurant The Kitchen has just launched a Sunday Brunch menu, so we went along to give it a try.
If you're looking for somewhere to go for Sunday Brunch in East Devon, this is the place! The large, airy restaurant has possibly the best views to be found for miles around, as it overlooks acres of the Sanctuary's rolling countryside, and out to the sea at Weston, near Sidmouth.
Brunch is served every Sunday from 9am until 3pm, perfect if you want a lazy Sunday morning. The menu is made up of the freshest, local ingredients, and every dish can be made meat-free with a wide range of vegan options.
We had the American style pancake stack, with banana and salted caramel (£7.50, also available with honey and thyme roasted figs, toasted walnuts and honey drizzle), with added ice-cream (£1.15) - you can also add smoky bacon but we chose to go extra sweet!
We also had the open BLT, a toasted ciabatta topped with smoky bacon, charred romaine lettuce and The Kitchen's homemade sunblushed tomato sauce (£6.50).
We couldn't possibly miss out on the day's special, which was a full English sandwich... toasted butter sourdough stacked with smoked bacon, pork sausage, grilled tomato, mushroom, hash brown, poached egg and sun blushed tomato ketchup (£7.95)!
The food was perfectly cooked and presented, and the portion sizes were good so we spent a good few hours afterwards walking around The Donkey Sanctuary to burn it off! There is plenty of seating in The Kitchen restaurant, all with great views, and for sunny days there is sheltered outdoor seating overlooking the donkeys and the fabulous view.
The Kitchen at The Donkey Sanctuary is part of the Exeter Food & Drink Trail, due to its commitment to serving locally sourced produce on its menu.
