January is National Dog Walking Month, so to celebrate, we‘ve chosen some of our favourite dog walks in and around Exeter.

Exeter city centre itself is very dog-friendly (check out our dog-friendly day out in Exeter blog to find out more), plus its location close to countryside, forest, moorland and the coast means there are numerous opportunities to explore the great outdoors with your four-legged friend!

The following walks are within a half hour journey from Exeter.

Exeter Green Circle

A scenic route circling the city, the Exeter Green Circle offers a mix of urban and green spaces, with fantastic views of the city’s skyline.

Twelve miles in total, the route takes you through green countryside valley parks to the pavements of quiet leafy suburbs, and can be split up into five, shorter sections. Our top picks for walking your dog, are the Ludwell Valley Walk, which takes you through rolling meadows of the Ludwell and Riverside valley parks, where you’re never far from the sound of running water; and the Mincinglake Walk,  which includes the butterfly-rich flower meadows of Mincinglake Valley Park, perfect for off-lead runs!

Exeter Quayside and Exe Estuary Trail

Enjoy riverside views with a walk along Exeter Quayside and Riverside Valley Park, where you’ll find miles of green, open space within walking distance of the city.

If you’re looking for a longer route, follow the Exe Estuary Trail, which stretches along the River Exe Estuary on both sides, from Exeter to Exmouth and Dawlish. Rail lines run along both sides of the estuary, so if you or your pooch are feeling tired, just hop back on the train to Exeter – up to two dogs are welcome on the train free of charge, find out more about rail travel with your pet here.

You’ll find plenty of dog-friendly pubs and cafés along the way, including the locals’ favourite waterside pubs, Double Locks and The Turf.
