Exeter Philharmonic Choir’s concert on 15th March promises to be a very special performance and a night you'll remember.

Devon-born virtuoso violinist Joel Munday made his concerto debut performing Mozart at the tender age of 15, after busking as a teenager to pay for his lessons at the Royal College of Music. Ten years on, he will be joining Exeter Philharmonic Choir and the internationally renowned London Mozart Players for an all-Mozart concert at Exeter Cathedral on the 15th March.

Joel will play the rarely performed Violin Concerto No. 1 in B flat major, while the Choir will sing Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor accompanied by the London Mozart Players and an array of top soloists - sopranos Lucinda Cox and Daisy Walford (a former Exeter Cathedral chorister), tenor Ruairi Bowen and bass Tim Mirfin.

The 100-strong sound of Exeter Philharmonic Choir combined with a top-flight UK orchestra, a talented young violinist and the four professional singers promises to create a very special evening - a wonderful opportunity to be immersed in Mozart’s sublime music.

Mr Munday, from Tedburn St Mary near Exeter, was one of only eleven musicians to be awarded a prestigious scholarship from the London Symphony Orchestra last year. He received £15,000 from the LSO to support his post-graduate studies at the Royal College of Music, as well as coaching and mentoring from the Orchestra. In July 2024, Joel was awarded a Distinction on completion of his Master of Performance. He has frequently played as a soloist with various symphony and chamber orchestras across the UK and credits his years as a busker with helping him perform in front of large audiences.

The London Mozart Players, despite their name, don’t just play in London and don’t just play Mozart! They are known internationally for working with many of the world’s greatest conductors and soloists and have developed a reputation for making and playing adventurous, ambitious and accessible music. They are also recognised as being at the forefront of embedding arts and culture into the life of local communities across the UK and beyond.

The concert on 15th March will be conducted by Exeter Philharmonic Choir’s Musical Director Howard Ionascu. He says: ‘Who better than the London Mozart Players to accompany the Exeter Philharmonic Choir for an All Mozart Programme? The Great Mass is a cornerstone of the choral repertoire for good reason. Some of Mozart’s most imaginative writing can be found in this work with especially glorious moments for the two soprano soloists.

‘Exeter Philharmonic Choir is delighted to welcome rising star violinist Joel Munday to perform Mozart’s Violin Concerto. Joel grew up in Devon and we are thrilled to be celebrating this local special talent. The concert partnership between The London Mozart Players and Joel marks another step in the development of his solo career.’

The spring concert is officially The Lord Mayor’s Concert. The Lord Mayor of Exeter and his consort will be in attendance and there will be a retiring collection for the Lord Mayor’s chosen local charity: FORCE.
