The sand between your toes, award winning beaches and stunning coastline. The Riviera Line passes along what is arguably one of England's best-loved stretches of railway.
Wander amongst the golden sand dunes at Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve, enjoy a picnic in the company of Dawlish's famous black swans and visit a traditional Victorian seaside resort, complete with pier, at Teignmouth. A trip to the Devon seaside is a must-experience and it's just a short rail journey from city to sea.
With so much to 'sea' and do along this wonderful stretch of South Devon coastline, here's our guide to making wonderful seaside memories.
Your coastal adventure departs from Exeter and the destination is Teignmouth. For the best seaside views on your journey then you'll want to claim a window seat on the left side although seats on the right will also treat you views over Powderham and maybe even some deer spotting!
As you wind your way out of the city the train hugs the Exe Estuary before reaching the open water as you pass through Starcross, Dawlish Warren and Dawlish. You'll be returning here later so for now just sit back and soak up the stunning coastal views that stretch to the horizon.
With its long promenade and Victorian pier, Teignmouth is a classic and traditional seaside resort. Take a paddle in the shallow waters, enjoy a bite to eat from many award winning menus across the town or gaze out to sea with a gentle stroll along the seafront and spend some pennies on the pier. You can also take the historic ferry across the river to the pretty fishing village of Shaldon.
After a relaxing morning, it's time to hop back on board the train and return in the direction of Dawlish, just a five minute journey along the coast.
You can't get more convenient than Dawlish train station as the railway runs right along the town's seafront and is just a stone's throw from the town. The long sandy beach is perfect for summer days of swimming and sandcastle building (with an ice cream of course!) or if you prefer to head inland then The Lawn makes for an ideal picnic spot where you can enjoy the company of the town's famous black swans.
Next stop along the coast, Dawlish Warren offers miles of beach and sand dunes backed by the 500 acre National Nature Reserve and golf course. Fun for all the family, the beach resort also includes shops, amusements, go-karts, adventure golf and pubs, with something for everyone all year round. If it's a little escapism you seek then you'll be in your element exploring the sandy expanse and can gaze across to Exmouth on the opposite side of the estuary. If you time it right then Dawlish Warren is a wonderful and tranquil spot for catching the last light of the day as pastel colours decorate the sky and sea.
There's never enough hours in the day when it comes to visiting Devon, particularly our outstanding coastline, but if you still have time then don't miss out on calling in at Starcross. A small waterside village with plenty of railway interest, it's home to the remains of one of Brunel's atmospheric railway pumping stations. Starcross is also your stopping point for visiting Powderham, the family home of The Earl of Devon. Immerse yourself in over 600 years of history as you explore the castle and grounds, complete with ancient Deer Park.
Back on the train and it's final destination Exeter as you return to the city. If you've been inspired to 'Sea Moor City' then check out our other guides to exploring the area by GWR rail, including Dartmoor, a delicious food safari and match day at Exeter Chiefs.
