Exeter's location in the heart of Devon means that we're surrounded by beautiful countryside to explore by foot and bike! The coast is also in reaching distance by bike, which means there are endless opportunities for exciting days out - Great Western Railway can help with part of the journey...
Day 1
Fasten your helmets and embark on a cycling adventure from Exeter! First of all, hire a bike from Saddles & Paddles on Exeter Quayside.
From the quayside, cycle alongside the River Exeter and follow the well-signposted Exe Estuary Trail for around 20 minutes to Topsham - a quaint, historic port packed with friendly independent shops, cosy pubs and plenty of scenic views to gaze at during your journey.
Feeling peckish? Stop off at one of the numerous cafes in Topsham to fuel the next leg of your cycling journey to Exmouth. The Exe Estuary Trail follows the route of the River Exe Estuary, on purpose-built cycle paths which are mainly off-road and flat.
When you arrive in Exmouth, head towards the seafront. Grab an ice cream or coffee (or both!) and enjoy a moment sitting on the beach, taking in a deep breath of fresh sea air.
Take your time to make your way back to Exmouth train station and begin your return journey to Exeter, alternatively you can take the scenic route by bike!
If you’d rather stay in Topsham a little longer - secure your bike and take a peaceful, self-guided stroll around the Goat Walk, admiring the gorgeous sights along the way.
When you’re ready to leave, hop back on your bike or jump on a GWR train and make your way back to Exeter!
Day 2
Get back on your bike from Saddles and Paddles, and this time follow the Exeter Canal cycle route, on the other side of the Exe Estuary. Along the way you’ll be surrounded by fascinating wildlife – on land and water! Continue past the Turf Locks, then stop and be amazed by the magnificent Powderham Castle.
Continue along the Exe Estuary Trail Starcross, where you can catch a train back to Exeter with your bike - sit back, relax and give your legs a rest… alternatively you can extend your adventure and cycle to Dawlish Warren and jump on a train there!
Once you arrive back to Exeter St David’s by train, travel along the calm River Exe back to Exeter quay to return your bike. Fancy dustbin lid pizzas for dinner? Head to On the Waterfront, or if you’re in the mood for more of the best local produce, take a seat at the Hour Glass.
