A trendy street in the heart of Exeter, Magdalen Road is home to an array of independent shops where you'll find a lot of love for local businesses.

Previously named one of the ‘10 coolest shopping areas in the whole world’ by The Guardian, take a short stroll from the city centre and you'll be welcomed by an array of distinct shops lining the street and each with their own character.

Flowers, local produce, handmade gifts, sustainable shopping, and much more. Join us for a walk along Magdalen Road as we pop into some of our favourite shopping spots.

Leaf Street

A wonderful flowery scent descends from the moment you walk into Leaf Street, with colourful bouquets of fresh (delivered twice weekly) and dried flowers beautifuly complementing the seasons. Celebrating their 20th anniversary in 2025, it's more than a shop but a note to the owner's floral passion but there's more, so much more. Discover unique, locally sourced, and handmade gifts and downstairs reveals a treasure box of pre-loved clothing for sale that's just waiting to be explored.

Magdalen Cheese and Provisions

Say cheese! A dairy lovers paradise, cheese is at the heart of everything for Magdalen Cheese and Provisions. Self-confessed 'cheesemongers' (yes that's an actual word), by selecting different cheeses on a weekly basis, you're guaranteed to taste what's the absolute best and cheese at its peak flavour. You'll also find their shelves stocked with all sorts of cheese-pairing goodies and you never know what new favourite cheese-combo you might discover.

Maker Maker

A wonderful shop with a big heart, Maker Maker reflects the passion of husband and wife team Rupert and Anita. Against the charming backdrop of carefully curated antique furniture, the shop provides a display of high-quality tools, beautiful fabrics, materials for makers and home furnishings. Inspiring visitors to discover their own creativity, you can even join the couple for some ukulele lessons!

The Common Beaver

Bagels and coffee, what's not to love about this classic combination. The Common Beaver excels in dam fine coffee and the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere makes it a must-visit for any trip to Magdalen Road. If you're lucky then pull up a stool and watch the world pass by from their front window as you sip on a freshly made brew and comforting pastry.

Nourish Zero Waste

Your one-stop eco-friendly shop, Nourish Zero Waste helps make sustainable living just that little bit easier. Offering a fantastic selection of zero waste products, including those hard-to-find items, the lovely staff mean you'll be coming back time after time for all your sustainable shopping.

The Sandwiched Inn

Who doesn't love a sandwich but The Sandwiched Inn is about oh so more than just a couple of slices of bread and a filling. Serving up the best in sandwiches, baguettes and wraps for on the go, it's also worth making this place your first call of the day to enjoy their artisan coffee and pastries.
