This purpose-built 26 mile, mainly flat walking and cycling route along the River Exe passes through beautiful riverside towns and villages steeped in maritime history. The Exe is one of the most important estuaries in Europe for wildlife, particularly birds, so be sure to keep an eye out for winter wildfowl and waders as you follow the route, which forms part of National Cycle Network 2.
Whether you cycle the whole route, or just a small section, you’re guaranteed idyllic views of both the coast and countryside with wonderful landscapes and pretty villages to enjoy. If you haven’t got a bike with you don’t worry, Exeter has plenty of places from which to hire one – including tandems and trailers/tow bars for kids!
The route runs alongside the railway both east and west of the estuary, so it is easy to cycle smaller sections then catch the train back to your starting point.
