The Quay Climbing Centre – climbing for everyone
Looking for a fun and exciting activity in Exeter? Whether you’re a family looking for an adventurous day out, a young person ready to try something new, or a visitor exploring the city, The Quay Climbing Centre is the perfect place to experience the thrill of climbing.
Set in the stunning Old Electricity Building on Exeter’s historic Quayside, The Quay is home to one of the largest indoor climbing walls in the Southwest. With a mix of climbing styles and routes for all abilities, it’s a welcoming space for complete beginners and experienced climbers alike.
Try climbing for the first time
Want to experience the thrill of climbing without needing to learn technical skills first? Our Auto Belay Taster Sessions let you get straight on the wall—no partner, no knots, no hassle. Just clip in, climb as high as you like, and the auto belay system will safely lower you back down.
It’s the easiest way to try climbing, perfect for beginners looking for a fun, active experience without the need for training or prior experience. Great for groups too—you’ll spend less time learning and more time climbing!
Clip ‘n Climb Exeter promises another way to enjoy climbing at The Quay – 26 fun climbs, all using auto belays, that are suitable for even the youngest climbers (aged 4 and above).
Learn to climb independently
If you’re keen to take things further, our Induction Sessions will teach you the skills you need to climb independently at The Quay. You’ll learn how to use the roped walls safely, including how to fit a harness, tie in, and belay a partner. It’s the perfect step if you want to progress as a roped climber and make climbing a regular part of your routine.
Push your limits
For those looking to climb even higher, The Quay has plenty of routes to challenge climbers of all levels on top rope and lead climbing walls that reach up to 14 metres, including some of the longest indoor routes in the UK. If you prefer to climb lower to the ground, our bouldering caves offer the perfect challenge without the need for ropes or you can visit our sister centre, Boulder Exe, where you’ll find over 950 square metres of bouldering split over two floors.
Refuel and relax
After your climb, unwind at The Workshop Café, which overlooks the climbing arena. Enjoy fresh coffee, homemade pizzas, toasties and seasonal specials—the perfect way to refuel after a session on the wall.
Whether you’re climbing for the first time or making it a regular adventure, we can’t wait to welcome you.
