When it comes to a traditional cream tea then in our humble opinion, Devon knows best!
While we're not going to get into the politics of how to layer your jam and cream the proper way, what we are going to do is celebrate National Cream Tea Day (yes that's actually a day on Friday 28th June) by sharing our top picks for where to enjoy this afternoon delight.
Eat on The Green
Made fresh daily and served only after 2:30pm, this is as Devon as you can get. Each Eat on The Green cream tea is accompanied by Devon clotted cream, home made jam from local farms and you get a taste of the good life while taking in a fantastic view of Exeter Cathedral.
The Ivy
For a cream tea with added glamour then The Ivy Exeter is the place to be, and be seen. Step inside to soak up the vibrant floral decor or take your tea outside where you can gaze across to the magnificent Exeter Cathedral. This one's definitely a feast for the eyes in terms of location and food.
Greendale Farm Shop Cafe
Cream tea with a bit of a twist, leave out the scone (controversial we know) and discover fresh Devon strawberries partnered with cream in a variety of ways conjured up by Greendale Farm Shop. From indulgent tarts to strawberry smoothie ice lollies and even a pavlova, you'll be absolutely spoilt for choice.
Cannonteign Falls
Daring to take the traditional cream tea and (said in hushed tones) creating wonderful different varieties, Canonteign Falls know how to really tempt your taste buds. Stick with tradition or go for estate honey instead of jam and then there's also a savoury option. Our advice... go with the family or friends and try them all!
Powderham
Picnic season is upon us and what better spot to indulge in a Devon cream tea than the magnificent grounds of Powderham. Scones, cream, jam and bubbles - what more could you ask for. This is what summer's all about.
Exeter Golf and Country Club
Whether it’s the warm home-made scones of a Devon cream tea or an extravagant three-tier afternoon tea, you can give way to a slice of pure luxury at Wear Park Restaurant. With or without the fizz, you'll also get to enjoy an unlimited supply of Loose Leaf Tea or Voyager Filter Coffee.
Hotel Indigo - tea and spa
What's better than a sparkling afternoon tea? One that also comes with spa access and a 30-minute treatment. Hotel Indigo offer the ultimate indulgence package which is perfect for special occasions, a girlie afternoon or just some relaxing you time. Go on, treat yourself!
Mercure Rougemont Hotel
How about swapping out the tea for some bubbles as the Mercure Rougemont Hotel offer prosecco or G&T with their food. Sit back, relax and sample the good life in their Drakes restaurant, which is conveniently located opposite Exeter Central train station.
Hotel du Vin
A little naughty but worth every bite, afternoon tea at Hotel du Vin is an experience that's made to be shared. Tuck into plain and fruit scones, along with the Chef's patisseries of the day. and sample outstandingly good tea infusions created by Bird & Blend Teas. There's even a champagne option for a taste of the high life.
Darts Farm
The best of the west, Devon cream teas are made for sharing. Whether it's tucking in from the comfort of Darts Farm restaurant or unpacking a delicious hamper when out for a countryside picnic, you can be assured of tasting something rather special from amazing artisan producers.
Devon Hotel
You can't go wrong with keeping your cream tea simple traditional, and the Devon Hotel knows exactly how to hit the spot. Fresh homemade scones, strawberry jam and lashings of Devon clotted cream served alongside a pot of freshly brewed tea or coffee. Everything you need for a taste of Devon.
Pink Ginger
You don't mess with a traditional cream tea but it's often also about the setting and the company you share it with. Alongside their incredible Japanese bakes and beverages, Pink Ginger is serving up delicious Cream Tea Tuesdays in a wonderfully relaxed setting on Paris Street. Don't forget the camera as it's definitely Insta-worthy!
