Exeter Cathedral
One of Europe's most magnificent cathedrals lies at the beating heart of Exeter. What better way to discover one of the oldest and most beautiful cities in England than with Exeter’s very own Red Coat Guides. Exeter's Underground Passages
The only passages of this kind open to the public in Britain, a guided tour of Exeter's Underground Passages is definitely one to tick off. With stories of wars and sieges, plague and pestilence, these medieval passages have always fascinated visitors and guided tours have taken place here since the 1930s. Their constant temerature also makes for a cooling summer experience and warming winter one.
Custom House Visitor Centre
Take a gentle stroll down to Exeter's historic Quayside and you'll be greeted by one of the most historic buildings on the waterfront, Custom House Visitor Centre. Housing displays, illustrations and artefacts which bring the history and development of Exeter’s Quayside to life, it also hosts a variety of arts and cultural events and activities as well as being an information centre welcoming locals and visitors alike.

UNESCO City of Literature
Did you know that Exeter is a UNESCO City of Literature? Exeter was awarded the status in 2019 in recognition for its 1,000 year unbroken history of making books and popularising reading since the early 13th century. You can uncover Exeter's literary heritage and culture with the Exeter Literary Map which showcases the city’s famous literary figures, picturesque reading spots, independent bookshops, and literary landmarks. St Nicholas Priory
Founded by William the Conqueror in 1087, step back in time for a visit to Exeter's oldest building - St Nicholas Priory. Turned into a rich merchant’s town house, the priory was linked to the woollen cloth trade and the busy life of commerce in the city. Step inside the West Wing to experience the Undercroft and Tudor Parlour, the medieval kitchen, the Great Hall and Tudor bed chamber or come along to a special performance at this unique venue.

Exeter Historic Guildhall
Serving as the centrepiece of Exeter's civic life for more than 800 years, Exeter's Historic Guildhall is more than just an ancient building. From civic functions and City Council meetings to weddings and civil ceremonies, there's lots going on but it's also open to the general public for you to have a nose around a piece of Exeter's history. Exeter's home of culture and creativity, Exeter Phoenix is a vibrant, world-class multi-artform venue in the heart of the city centre. Roman walls
Immerse yourself in nearly 2,000 years of history and follow in the footsteps of the Romans. Start your journey by picking up a City Wall Trail leaflet and discover fascinating Roman attractions that offer a glimpse into Exeter's ancient past. You'll soon learn how to recognise original Roman stone work and don't miss the well-preserved Roman West Gate.

The calm waters of the River Exe make for a beautiful way to soak up a unique aquatic perspective of Exeter. Hire a canoe, kayak or paddleboard, with hire options at Saddles and Paddles and AS Watersports, and let the river take you on a relaxing journey. Make sure to refuel at one of several waterside pubs providing refreshment stops along the way.
Visit the beach by train
That wonderful feeling of soft sand between your toes is closer than you think from Exeter. Less than 30 minutes by GWR train and you're transported to the Great British seaside. Breathe in the fresh sea air as you stroll along Exmouth promenade, gateway to the Jurassic Coast, or dip your toes in the award winning clear waters at Dawlish Warren. Haldon Forest Park
The great outdoors is calling and Haldon Forest Park offers a wonderful place for making unforgettable memories. Powderham
Beautifully positioned along the banks of the River Exe, adventure and escapism awaits at Powderham. Spanning over six centuries of history and family home to The Earl of Devon, explore the historic Castle at your own pace (inside and out) or wander through the picturesque gardens and grounds where you'll find the ancient Deer Park. Don't miss a hike up to the Belvedere where you'll be rewarded with stunning views overlooking the estuary.

Crealy Theme Park

Parliament Street
Quietly tucked away, and yet within plain sight of Exeter's busy High Street, is a rather intriguing record breaker. Parliament Street lays claim to being Britain's narrowest street, measuring just 25" at its narrowest point and 45" at its widest, with a length of about 50 metres. Blink and you'll miss walking by it!
