This year’s lecture in memory of the Festival’s Founder considers the nature of dictatorships. Were there signs about Putin all along? How should we deal with President Xi of China? How do these tyrants, autocrats and despots seize power and how do they exercise it? And how do they lose it? Very few die peacefully in their own beds. As the world moves in favour of authoritarian rule, this is the right moment to seek warnings, and lessons, from history. Political commentator Iain Dale brings together the opinions of 64 different authors - a mix of historians, academics, journalists and politicians - to ask: are there specific character traits that all dictators share, and what can we learn from them in order to spot the warning signs in future?
