Many would say it's the most iconic British culinary invention and that there's nothing more quintessentially British than the humble sandwich.
British Sandwich Week (20th to 26th May) is a week-long celebration of the greatest food to go and we've picked out some top spots around Exeter to get your sandwich fix. We're not just talking cheese and pickle or tuna and mayo here but some culinary masterpieces that are a lunchtime game changer.
Between Bread
Banging breakfast buns, stacked sourdough sandwiches and fresh filled focaccias - Between Bread is an absolute mecca for sandwich lovers who want to try something out of the ordinary. Their sandwich creations are something to behold and new inventions are popping up all the time to tantalise your taste buds with.
Favourite filling: Halloumi Pakora - crispy fried spiced halloumi pakora, butter curry sauce, pickled pink onions, green chilli, coriander and lime aoili, fresh crunchy leaves.
Sacred Grounds
A foodie haven for everyone, when it comes to fresh, delicious, considered food then Sacred Grounds is a must visit. With a changing seasonal menu and everything made from scratch in the open kitchen, you'll be spoilt for choice in this vegan cafe. Surrounded by independent shops in the quaint McCoy's Arcade, the setting is as beautiful as the food served up.
Favourite filling: Lox bagel - oak-smoked carrot lox, avocado, cream 'cheese', capers, dill and rocket.
Eat on the Green
Gazing out over the historic Cathedral Green and people watching as you tuck into a traditional Ploughman's. Does it get any more British than this? The sandwiches at Eat on the Green are made with lightly toasted granary bread and all served with skin on fries and salad garnish. Here you'll find views and food in perfect harmony.
Favourite filling: Ploughman's sandwich - Thinly sliced ham, emmental cheese, lettuce, tomato, apple and Devon cider chutney
Greendale
Packed with fresh, locally-sourced produce, the award-winning Greendale Farm Shop and its family-friendly café make for a perfect spot to create your own bespoke sandwich or pick something off the lunch menu. With its own on-site butchers' department and wet-fish counter, there's an abundance of fabulous food that's a real taste of Devon
Favourite filling: how about teaming up some traditionally hand-crafted artisan Sharpham cheese with some flavoursome chutney or jam.
Exeter Cosy Club
It's not every day you get to tuck into a sandwich in an old hospital but then again, Exeter Cosy Club isn't your every day eating establishment. The theatrical space and wonderful ambience make for a lovely lunch spot and there's a choice of sandwiches on the menu, including fish goujon, roasted red pepper, whipped feta and baby plum tomato open sandwich and the Cosy Club sandwich, which comes with a side of fries.
Favourite filling: Fish Goujon Sandwich - served in soft white bloomer bread with gem lettuce and tartare sauce and served with fries.
Darts Farm
With a working farm at its heart, Darts Farm offers the very freshest seasonal fruit and veg straight to your basket. Their food hall is packed with the most wonderful artisan breads, Westcountry cheeses, homemade chutneys and jams, meaning you can create your very own sandwich using the very best local produce.
Favourite filling: make your own from the an array of local produce available through the farm shop.
How on Earth Vegan
With a passion for great tasting food and a drive to create exciting and affordable, cruelty-free options for the plant-based folks of Exeter, How on Earth Vegan have developed an array of handmade meat substitutes to pack your sandwiches with. Check out their house-made 'salami', 'chorizo' and 'pastrami' along with their ‘Satay’ tofu toastie, which is completely gluten free!
Favourite filling: shredded “chicken”, “pepperoni”, vegan nduja mayo, tomato, fresh basil and rocket in freshly baked focaccia.
Tortilla Exeter
If your taste buds are craving something rather different then how about a Mexican approach to your usual lunch-time sandwich? Tortilla Exeter make best the burrito joint in town but if you're new to them then it's simply a tortilla wrap that's usually filled with refried beans, sauces, meat, cheese and vegetable toppings, then rolled shut and served hot or cold.
